This substantial history focuses on the political evolution of Burma during the last century and a half. While inevitably the impact of British colonial rule receives major attention, Cady's central theme is the growth of Burmese nationalism and the struggle for independence. Based almost entirely on English language sources, the work nevertheless retains an admirable objectivity and constitutes a major contribution to the field.
