At long last, this massive study of the possible futures of the dollar appears at a propitious moment. While there were times in the recent past when the shape of the future world monetary system seemed clear, that is not so now, and thus Mr. Bergsten's cost-benefit analysis of alternatives has real meaning, for foreigners as well as Americans. The study also contains a wealth of historical material.
