Mendershausen guides us lucidly and intelligently through the differences (and occasional similarities) of French and German responses to the crisis, but cannot say who, in the end, is better off. Vernon's team (appearing originally in Daedalus) cover a wider range. We can hope for more analytical history of the change in the world's oil regime as good as these two volumes.
