One of the grand old men of the Japanese economic world (Professor Emeritus and ex-President of Hitotsubashi University, President of the Japan Institute of Labour) sets forth in these collected papers his ideal of a peculiarly Japanese industrial harmony, in which management paternalism and labor loyalty will bear modern fruit in unconflicted labor-management cooperation, and Western efficiency will be wedded to Japanese tradition. It is an ideal that now appears unlikely.
