In 1969 Brandt became the first Social Democratic Chancellor in Germany in 39 years. His book is a modest recital of that rise to power and of his years in office. His memoirs devote much space to his exchanges with foreign leaders, but his own characteristically thoughtful, almost brooding reflectiveness shines through as well. A more serious contribution to our understanding of those years than the excerpts run in Der Spiegel suggested.
