History of the USA Since World War I

An interesting sample of official Soviet academic perceptions of the United States. The authors stress the simultaneous "intensification of reactionary trends and militarism" and the progress of countervailing "democratic, progressive and revolutionary" forces with deep historical roots. The interpretations are wooden, ideological, predictable. The conclusions are optimistic, given the book's assumptions: there is likely to be "a fundamental reconstruction of the socio-economic and political foundations of American society." The book has a bibliographic chapter on "Soviet Studies of the Recent History of the USA."
