Criticizing the Allende administration from the Left, the authors attribute its failure to the basic error of trying to use the existing state apparatus to create a workers' state. Armed insurrection was necessary. It follows that the U.S. role, while important, was subsidiary, since the middle-class opposition to Unidad Popular was inevitable anyway.
