Despite the intimidating sociological jargon, there is much of interest here. Examining the Cuzco region, the authors find considerable social stratification and inequalities, but also surprisingly high mobility, both among groups and individuals. "The elites have circulated;" however, "the base of the pyramid [the Indians] has remained relatively stable."
