Political Development in Eastern Europe; Change and Adaptation in Soviet and East European Politics
These books are about political "development" in the singular. Thus there is much about modernization, social mobilization, participation, structural change and the like, and not much about recent politics. The comparative politics approach to communist societies developed by Triska and others over the past decade has expanded our knowledge considerably, although no grand theoretical structure has yet emerged. The Triska-Cocks volume sets a standard of analysis and organization which the Shapiro-Potichnyj book does not reach.
