One gets from this book, the most comprehensive yet to appear on Turkey's postwar politics, a keen appraisal of how political democracy has worked, or not worked, and of the supra-constitutional role played on occasion by the military. Scholarly but not dull, it contains interesting personal judgments (Demirel, for example, emerges as only a wily politician but Ecevit as a statesman).
