The concluding volume in this series portrays the frustrations of U Thant during the last four years he served as Secretary-General. The editors depict the dilemmas of a world leader witnessing the erosion in authority of the United Nations and his efforts to provide a forum for resolving international conflicts - the Middle East, Cyprus, Indochina, South Asia - and internal wars - Nigeria. Of special importance are Thant's well-articulated views assessing the role the U.N. has played in the past and should fill in the future.
