Building on the previous classics in this field by Schelling and Kahn, Richard Smoke has written perhaps the finest study to date of the dynamics of escalation. In a perfect example of focused, comprehensive analysis, he combines a well-defined research method with historical case studies and derives important conclusions. The result is conceptually rigorous, scholastically brilliant, and analytically a major contribution.
