The widespread use of political terrorism and the vulnerability of our societies in the face of it have set scholars as well as governments to searching for its cause and cure. Wilkinson's book tells much of the story of recent terrorist campaigns and episodes, points up the dilemmas of counteraction and sees a constant struggle ahead. Walter Laqueur's Reader is a handy compendium of writings on the subject from Aristotle to Laqueur.
