Together, these two volumes give a comprehensive and generally favorable picture of Iran from World War I to the present, and on into the future. The Lenczowski book, more solid than the usual jerry-built symposium, covers everything from politics to poetry. Iran in the 1980s, with Iranian and American contributions varying widely in content and quality, is the full and often informative record of a conference held in October 1977.
