Since the time of its settlement, so runs the argument of this book, Spain has been living "against the grain of history"-politically immature, socially unstable, and out of phase with developments in the rest of Europe. Today, having attained political democracy, Spain is catching up at last. The author, a veteran of the Civil War and of Franco's prisons, believes that Spain's besetting problems are well on the way to solution.
