These are fascinating sketches of men and women who, since the 1920s, have influenced and been influenced by the author. Chapters on Fritz Kraemer ("the man who invented Kissinger"), Henry Luce and Alfred Sloan are especially good. The diffident word "bystander" in the title should be taken with a smile.
