As Ambassador Reischauer says in the blurb for this fascinating and extremely important book, "Japan today has a more smoothly functioning society and an economy that is running rings around ours." Vogel's book helps explain why Japan is the most dynamic of all modern industrial nations. It argues that the primary reason for our chronic trade imbalance with Japan is Japanese superiority over the U.S. in industrial competitiveness. And it suggests how an understanding of the Japanese experience might assist America in overcoming some of its own societal and economic difficulties.
