The result of six years of collaborative research by the Japanese and American co-authors, this study is a model of its kind. It describes in great detail how a dispute between two declining national textile industries was allowed to grow into a bitter struggle between two governments despite their clear interest in avoiding such a contest. Since U.S.-Japanese economic relations remain potentially so divisive because of the continuing trade imbalance, this should be required reading for all those involved in shaping those relations.
