It takes an effort to recall the state of the international monetary system in March 1977 when the conference covered in this volume was held. Inevitably, some of the discussion has lost its edge, but many good things remain in observations by experienced people about such lasting matters as the relationship between internal and external factors in shaping exchange rates and the international financial position of countries.
