A series of essays, mostly by scholars associated with the Bologna Center of International Studies, analyzing the history and specific policies of the Italian communists, of whom Pierre Hassner, in a characteristically astute essay, writes: "Their self-examination and their effort to adapt to reality have gone much further than those of any other communist party (with the exception of Dubcek's Czechoslovakian party) and possibly of any party at all." And still they may fail in their objectives.
