Lyricism and hope survive Paton's decades of struggle and partial silence; nonetheless, the fragmented structure of his novel about the formation of the South African Liberal Party conveys a perceptible weariness. The book catches its marvelously realized assemblage of South Africans at a particularly poignant moment-as apartheid is emerging but before its later grip on all their lives can be foreseen.
