Dangerous Relations: The Soviet Union in World Politics, 1970-1982

Reviewed by John C. Campbell

Adam Ulam follows his earlier works on Soviet foreign policy and Soviet-American relations with an account of détente and what happened to it. Seeing the policies of both countries in the light of internal and external factors, of reciprocal reactions, of relative strengths and weaknesses and frequent misperceptions of the equation, he is diligent in the search for facts, capable of sharp insights, and is not afraid of informed guesswork and controversial conclusions.
