MacFarquhar's exceptionally well documented study and careful analysis is a model of scholarship and will be drawn on by Sinologists for years to come. This is the second volume in a trilogy which examines the politics, economics, culture and international relations of China from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. (Vol. I was reviewed in the April 1976 issue of Foreign Affairs.)
