Business in the Shadow of Apartheid: U.S. Firms in South Africa
An American banker, a lawyer, and an economist provide a platform here for a group of influential South Africans reflecting on the need for more constructive action by foreign investors. Most thoughtful is an argument by Afrikaner political scientist Hermann Giliomee for business support of "the free movement of labor." As the authors seem to recognize, the book is seriously deficient in omitting the arguments for disinvestment. It also cries out for an assessment of how U.S. businesses have or have not helped their black workers since the advent of the Sullivan principles in 1977.
