This analysis of the role of the military in the liberalization movement of 1968 adds to our understanding of those events and of the intensity of subsequent efforts, both by Prague and of Moscow, to restore the necessary "moral-political authority." Although the Czechoslovak experience has been in many ways unique, this work has relevance for other East European countries where, as in Czechoslovakia, the U.S.S.R. exerts direct influence on the armed forces and claims their loyalty to "proletarian internationalism."
