The Root: The Marines in Beirut, August 1982-February 1984
An account based almost entirely on interviews and presented through the eyes and in the words of the Marine Corps enlisted men and junior officers who served in Lebanon. The author shows that there was more fighting than the press or the U.S. government reported at the time. He finds no excuse for the decision to place the marines, with slight means of defense, in the fateful barracks at the Beirut airport where so many died. This is a book about danger and death on the dusty ground, not about high policy (if there was any).
