The author, born into an aristocratic and public-spirited Russian family in 1913, was a Canadian diplomat from 1939 to 1971. His career dealt mainly with the U.N., NATO and European affairs. His memoirs, in the tradition of fine Canadian writing about diplomacy, are good humored, succinct and informative.
