Nine detailed and scholarly essays by Chilean and American academics examine all aspects of the Pinochet regime. The papers originated in a Woodrow Wilson Center workshop in 1980 and for the most part bring their stories up to the end of 1982, antedating the 1983 political crisis. The general prognosis is negative: "Only an escalation of violence seems in store."
