George Quester has been one of the more innovative and prolific writers on nuclear strategy. This collection pulls together essays from out-of-the-way sources and is timely in that nuclear deterrence is under greater questioning today than ever before. One message is: don't tinker too quickly with what has worked in the past, e.g., nuclear deterrence, or adopt too freely alternatives of uncertain validity such as the Strategic Defense Initiative or no-first-use declarations.
