This is the third in a series of studies resulting from the collaboration of research institutes in the United States, Japan and Indonesia. The introduction by Robert A. Scalapino is probably the single most thorough overview of Asian security issues that has been written in recent years. He argues that the West needs a concept of "comprehensive security" with an emphasis upon the economic and social as well as military components. Accordingly, he stresses the need to strengthen those international organizations operating in the economic and social fields.
