Authoritarians and Democrats: Regime Transition in Latin America

Reviewed by Robert D. Crassweller

Attempting to fathom the dynamics and prospects of Latin American evolution, the authors of these essays conclude that "there is no unilinear tendency toward [either] democracy or authoritarian rule. Rather, the predominant pattern is cyclical, with alternating democratic and authoritarian 'movements'. . . . Both tendencies are rather strong." The treatment covers a wide geographical range and a broad diversity of examples. An interesting and helpful study.
