In this account of the last days of Portuguese Angola and the beginning of its ongoing civil war, the author, a Polish journalist, plumbs the surreal depths underlying human conflicts over power. As in his earlier book on the fall of Haile Selassie, Kapuscinski vividly portrays a decaying surface and suggests the eroding forces at work upon it-in this case, the terror and confusion of Angolans in the abrupt and frenzied departure of their colonial rulers.
