This is a formidable compendium focusing on the ideas, doctrines and methods of economics and their history. The many biographies, including quite a few of living economists, emphasize their contributions rather than their life histories. Most of the articles are good reading even for non-economists. Taken altogether, this is an impressive and valuable reference work of the sort that does not come along every decade.
