Reading the papers that make up this collection does not lead one to the conclusion that Lebanon is heading toward viability. Although written for a symposium held in 1984 they are by no means dated and serve as a solid basis for understanding Lebanon's internal, regional and international problems today and tomorrow. The authors know their subject and provide ample documentation. The three papers on U.S. policy (by Irene Gendzier, Michael Hudson and Anthony Cordesman) constitute a chilling chronicle of misconceptions and failure.
