This study of post-imperial Ethiopia combines a very full historical account of the coup which overthrew Haile Selassie, the stages of the revolution which followed, and an assessment of the policies-particularly land reform-of the successor regime, the Dergue. Looking at the saga of Ethiopia's mounting economic problems, the author concludes that failures of development management have overshadowed ideology, policy and structure.
