The author, editor in chief of Tehran's largest daily newspaper from 1973 to 1979, brings an understanding of Iranian culture and politics (lacking in even the best accounts by Americans) to this very good account of the interaction of Iran and the United States from the 1950s to the present. Although he is no friend of the Iranian Revolution, his judgments are fair and well documented; he makes particularly good use of the thousands of American diplomatic documents published by Iran after the seizure of the embassy in Teheran.
