With the shade of Brezhnev conducting, this orchestra is distinctly out of tune with the times. With nary a foreshadowing of the Gorbachev shift on regional policy, the durability of the analysis is surely in the eye (or the theology) of the beholder. If they were writing today, many of the authors might well view the new Soviet approach as a wily variation on familiar dialectics.
