Ten economists and three political scientists contribute essays on economic stabilization and adjustment policies in a variety of different Latin American countries during the past decade. Collectively, they seek to determine what difference the type of regime makes for the relative success of austerity programs. The absence of systematic comparison precludes firm conclusions, but the overall impression the book leaves is that deeper internal structures and international circumstances are as important as whether a regime is authoritarian or democratic in determining whether an austerity program will be effectively implemented.
