The ambiguous role of Austria in the rise and fall of Hitler's Third Reich is attracting renewed attention among successor generations. Recent disclosures illuminate the contemptible wartime record of that country's current president, but newly declassified archives also permit a fuller assessment of the anti-Nazi resistance. Molden's 1979 autobiography told of his own role as secret agent for Allen Dulles, the American intelligence chief in wartime Switzerland (whose daughter he later married). He now fleshes out the broader picture with dozens of other human stories. Molden's unexceptionable conclusion is that just as the first postwar generation comfortably underestimated the numbers and crimes of Austrian Nazis, so also underestimated were the numbers and exploits of those who resisted.
