Somehow Rupnik, a writer of Czech origin now residing in the West, has outdone other scholars and journalists in capturing the essence of the communist system in central and Eastern Europe and the role of the intelligentsia in conforming to or resisting it. His book is more than a calendar of events: besides being a revealing study of cultural politics and political culture, it offers keys to understanding the problems of dismantling and replacing the system.
