The weekly Ogonyok, under the editorial guidance of Vitaly Korotich, who was not always so bold, has been in the forefront of trenchant journalism exposing the ills of Soviet society, past and present, and supporting the need for honesty and reform-generally backing Gorbachev and trying to keep him from backsliding. This collection of translated articles on a wide variety of subjects-crime, alcohol, ideology, Afghanistan, antisemitism and others-is a representative sample.
