Inside The Cold War: Loy Henderson And The Rise Of The American Empire, 1918-1961

Reviewed by Gaddis Smith

A model biography of a quintessentially professional American diplomat whose career flourished along with the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Loy Henderson did not attain the glamorous public recognition of a George Kennan or Charles Bohlen, but his consistent anti-Soviet outlook and extraordinary capacity for work exerted great influence in the State Department for decades. His weakness, as the author points out, was that he knew what he was against, but "was less clear what he was for."
