A conference was convened in 1989 to discuss the Iraqi revolution of 1958, with emphasis on Hanna Batatu's massive book on "The Old Social Classes." This volume includes the conference papers, and most of the authors make worthy contributions, especially Louis, Khalidi, Owen and Axelgard. Batatu's own conclusions are especially interesting, including his rather optimistic assessment of Iraq's national integration. A book for specialists.
