Although uneven and a bit unfocused this anthology is worthwhile because of its largely successful attempt to go beyond snapshots of the moment and to consider underlying trends for Latin America during the 1980s and 1990s. Fundamental problems of inequitable income distribution, inefficient economies, unsustainable environmental practices and fragile democratic governance are stressed in this sober overview.
