Adrienne Redd

Adrienne Redd is a professor of sociology at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania. She conducted her doctoral research on the perception of the nation-state as a source of order during the upheavals of globalization. This autumn Professor Redd is teaching a first-time seminar at Arcadia entitled Understanding Global News. The course combines media analysis and political sociology to create a framework within which undergraduates can make sense of world events as they happen. Students examine news from a variety of sources, such as Reuters, The New York Times, Al Jazeera, and BBC America, as well as policy analysis from Foreign Affairs. The objective of the course is for students to analyze the news by discussing the subtleties of reporting, editing, and imagery. Redd, who was a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker before returning to graduate school, also teaches courses on cinema and media studies. In October, she will speak at the annual meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science on "Voices of the Public Intellectual on Sustainability."
