BGIA Core Seminar: Professor Carter Page

BARD GLOBALIZATION AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM
Professor Carter Page
Bard College, Spring 2009

Objectives

The central overarching objective of the Core Seminar is to demonstrate effective methods of having impact in the international arena. The course offers a review of key elements of the theory and practice of international relations which will provide context for the BGIA experience in this semester's internship. It will also provide a framework that can help guide one's approach to future international endeavors.
The course will consider several of the principal drivers of globalization and will include a direct introduction to several of the leading actors in this sphere, including both practitioners and thought leaders. As part of the bridge between the semester's academic work and professional experience, the class will include research and writing which supplement and build upon the students' specific internships. This format will allow for the further development of critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and written and oral presentation.
Within the context of these overall objectives, the course will consider the following key relationships that have affected the process of globalization:

• What are the methods for having a material impact in the arena of international affairs?
• Who are the key parties and representatives of these parties involved in the process of globalization?
• How do relationships amongst leaders and societies shape the direction of trends in states?
• What opportunities may be seen among countries in transition?
• What roles do global markets play in shaping international relations?
