Erik Mortensen Wins Foreign Affairs Student Essay Contest
Foreign Affairs has selected the winner of the second annual Foreign Affairs Student Essay Contest sponsored by Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). Congratulations to Erik Mortensen, a student at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
Mortensen’s essay, "A Tale of Two Wests," argues that "although 'the West and the rest paradigm' is outdated, the United States and Europe can continue to play decisive roles on the world stage." Mortensen will receive a prize of $1,000 and will be honored at a "Back to School" event and reception at the offices of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York at 12:15 pm on October 21. Students who wish to attend the event must R.S.V.P. in advance to educators@cfr.org.
In addition, the editors of Foreign Affairs selected five honorable mentions for students who also submitted strong responses to the essay topic, "Is the decline of the West inevitable?" Congratulations to (in alphabetical order) Anthony Bakshi of Brown University in Rhode Island, John Cappel of Princeton University in New Jersey, David Kelly of Seton Hall University in New Jersey, Alexander Murray-Watters of Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, and Sanjena Anshu Sathian of Yale University.
The Foreign Affairs Student Essay Contest was open to all undergraduates. The magazine received 280 submissions from all over the world including universities in Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Peru, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Next year’s contest guidelines will be disclosed in January 2011 on ForeignAffairs.com.
