Marvin Marcus

Marvin Marcus is an Associate Professor of Japanese and Comparative Literature at Washington University in St. Louis and directs the graduate program in International Affairs, administered through University College. Professor Marcus specializes in modern Japanese literature and culture, with a focus on personal narratives-- memoir, reminiscence, essay, and autobiography. His most recent book is Reflections in a Glass Door: Memory and Melancholy in the Personal Writings of Natsume Soseki (Hawaii, 2009). His next project focuses, among other things, on literary evocations of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). Recently Professor Marcus assigned Yoichi Funabashi’s article “Can the DPJ Change Japan?” from the November/December issue of Foreign Affairs.

This fall Professor Marcus is teaching a class on Current Issues in International Affairs.The core seminar is a unique survey course involving the participation of the full International Affairs faculty. Readings include A World of Nations (Oxford Press), Globalisms (Rowman & Littlefield), and America and the World, an anthology of Foreign Affairs articles.
