The Shock of the Global: The 1970s in Perspective
In early March Harvard University Press released The Shock of the Global: The 1970s in Perspective edited by Niall Ferguson, Charles S. Maier, Erez Manela, and Daniel Sargent. Viewed through the lenses of academia and pop culture, the 1970s are often cast in a Western European or U.S.-centric light. In general, the era is painted as a time of social turmoil, economic stagflation, and political scandal. Pooling authors with a diverse range of expertise, The Shock of the Global looks beyond these typical characterizations, arguing that the notable legacy of the ‘70s is a transformation in international politics and the advent of globalization.
