A New Cold War?
 |
The Russian invasion of Georgia on August 8 has raised questions about the future of Washington's relations with Moscow, the strategic ambitions of the Medvedev-Putin regime, and the future of NATO enlargement in the Black Sea region. For the past five years, Foreign Affairs authors have discussed and debated these issues: Charles King wrote on the future of Georgia in 2004, Dmitri Trenin warned that Moscow had already left the West in 2006, and Dimitri Simes blamed arrogant U.S. policies after the Cold War and Vladimir Putin's defiance for the deteriorating bilateral relationship in late 2007. Earlier this year, Ronald Asmus argued that NATO should enlarge further in the face of a defiant Russia and Michael McFaul and Kathryn Stoner-Weiss insisted that Putin's market authoritarianism was not responsible for Russia's economic growth. These five articles provide an overview of the political, strategic, and economic issues behind the current U.S.-Russian impasse.
